Features & Benefits

Holzol Decking Oil is suitable for most types of garden wood, including softwood and hardwood decking, garden furniture, sheds, fences and more.

Formulated from a blend of natural oils modified with urethane resin, it’s safe for plants and animals when dry.

Always do a test area before starting any project to check suitability and compatibility. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the tin at all times.

Stir the tin thoroughly before and periodically during application to ensure a consistent finish.

  1. Apply a thin, even film of deck oil with a suitable decking applicator
  2. Work the oil into the surface of the wood grain
  3. Wipe off any excess oil with a clean lint free cloth
  4. Allow the first coat to dry for 8-12 hours
  5. Apply a second coat as above.
  6. Allow 24 hours to completely dry
  7. If the decking is particularly dry, a third thin coat can be applied if necessary

New hardwood decking may require a period of weathering, to open up the wood grain before oiling.

This makes it easier for the oil to penetrate into the surface of the timber. The time required is dependent on the type of decking-board and wood used.

Check with the decking supplier for guidance on how long decking boards should be left to weather before oiling. New and untreated softwood decking can be oiled immediately.

  1. Decking should be swept with a stiff broom to remove all surface dirt and debris
  2. Traces of mould and algae should be treated with a suitable decking cleaner
  3. To restore the colour of decking that has turned grey or silver over time, use a decking restorer if required
  4. If required, treat decking with a suitable wood preservative to protect against mould, algae and insect attack

Previously Treated Decking

Old coating systems such as decking paints and varnish-like decking stains must be fully removed back to bare wood before oiling.

  1. Remove old decking finishes by pressure washing or using a dedicated decking stripper / remover
  2. For stubborn areas, allow decking to weather for several weeks then repeat process
  3. Old oiled finishes should be cleaned thoroughly with a suitable decking cleaner

Please note: Decking that has been oiled within the last year may not be ready to absorb a new coat of decking oil. It is advisable to treat a small test area first to test absorption.

If the oil on the test area fails to penetrate, dry in the specified time, goes tacky, sticky or forms a film on the surface that can be easily scratched off, then delay oiling.
